Shrub or small tree with young growth finely pubescent. Leaves commonly in whorls of 3, somewhat coriaceous, narrowly oblong-lanceolate, midrib prominent, lateral veins numerous, fine, up to 10 or more cm. long, sharply acute. Flowers showy, in terminal, cymose clusters. Follicles elongated. Introduced ornamental, naturalized in thickets (9781). The flowers vary from white to red, but only red-flowered specimens were seen.
