The New York Botanical Garden Plants of BOLIVIA Apoeynaceae Thevetia peruviana (Pers.) K. Schum. det. M. Nee, 2005 Depto. Tarija, Prov. Gran Chaco, vie. central Villa Montes. Formerly chaco forest. 21°15.94’S, 63°28.55’W. alt. 385 m. Small street trees, 10-15 cm. in diameter, 3-4 m. tall, often with a somewhat tortuous stem and rounded crown, a very suitable and ornamental street tree. Sap milky. Corolla yellow. Fruit green. Common in Villa Montes, but most of the trees have been attacked by a caterpillar which forms small nets around groups of leaves, hangs from silk threads in the morning, leaves dark frass on the ground, and has seriously damaged or entirely killed all the leaves on some plants. This species collected again in Villa Montes on 9 Feb. 2006 under no. Nee & Linneo 53994’, at this time the plants were completely leafed out, very healthy looking, flowering and being visited by hummingbirds. Coll.: M. Nee 53205 29 May 2005 04173392
