  • Description

    Shrub 10 feet high; wood moderately soft, whitish, odorless, bitterish; bark green beneath the epidermis, brown, smooth or only thinly checked; branches subverticillately rebranched, green, ascendingly spreading; leaves coriaceous, chiefly horizontal, nearly flat, lucid dark green above, paler beneath; inflorescence erect, the stalks and calyx green; corolla tube whitish, the 5 lobes overlapping and twisted to the right in the bud state, in anthesis rotately spreading; the 5 stamens in the hairy corolla throat; style greenish white, very slender, bearing an abruptly much thickened green stigma; ripe fruit ellipsoid, 1/2 to 3/4 inch long, steel glaucous blue, 1-celled but with 2 seeds.
