12136. Xochnera rosea (X..) Reiehb. Perennial herbs,
forming great masses in sandy soil near the beach; stem usually
reclining, ultimately erect, only few branched from the middle,
terete, quite tough, turning red as also the ascending branches;
leaves mostly ascending, membranous, lighter green beneath,
flat but the sides usually undulate and more or le33 curred.
upon the underside; flowers few at a time, from the terminal
leaf axils, erect, delicate; calyx green, the odrolla tube
yellowish so; the 5 flat segments rotately spreading, pink
above, whitish so beneath, the throat very deep red; the pale
yellow anthers sessile upon the expanded terminal portion of
the corolla tube; fruits green, ascending, subterete, strict,
1 inch long, 2-celled f?) many-seed^d*. an everlasting
