Perennial graminoid; Stem bases red; staminate scales dark
burgundy red; pistilate scales with green central stripe; previous
vear’s leaves persistent; culms and new leaves erect; rhizomes wiry.
In association with Carya tomentosa, Quercus velutina, Luzula
multiflora, Anemone quinqaefolia and Pyrola amencana.
