Habitat
Cominant over large areas of open sandy ground (cut-over gallery), subject to grazing and trampling. River margin. Cut-over gallery forest and adjacent cerrado.

Description
Stoloniferous herb with long precumbent stems rooting at nodes. Leaves very variable in shape, serration, and pubescence, often somewhat crisped, with strong odor. Calyces and bracts violet-black, becoming pale yellow-green in fruit. Corolla rich red-violet outside, inner side of lobes rich blue-violet, paler inside throat; anthers dark, with white pollen. Fruiting heads detaching as a whole when mature. the calyx tube fleshy, pale green with spreading spinose teeth. Phenology of specimen: Flower.
