  • Location

Bolivia. Santa Cruz. Andrés Ibáñez Prov. Along highway from Santa Cruz to Montero, 2 km S of turnoff to Aeropuerto Internacional Viru-Viru, 12 km N of center of Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

  • Habitat

Sandy, grassy roadside. Through former savanna, with a mostly solid cover of grasses, mostly African species of Brachiaria.

  • Description

Striking, wand-like herbs 1.5-2.5 m tall, on grassy roadside, mostly with exotic Brachiaria grass, the habitat preferences uncertain, not noticed in adjacent pastures or in Viru-Viru Pampa, the natural grassland surrounding the airport, but can apparently tolerate the soil distubance of road construction here several years ago, There are no other collections at NY from Bolivia; could this be a recent introduction? Few-branched, or often completely unbranched. Flowers typical Desmodium violet pink, fading to a metallic blue. Fruit yellow-green, then light brown.
