Basin of Rio Morona, Rio Mangosiza. Nayumbime,
45 km SE of Sucua (by air) ca. 2°43'S, 77°38'W.
Undulating terrain, reddish clay soils. Elev. ca.
300 m. Secondary forest behind Don Luis Najamte's
house.
Long-stemmed herb to 2m, stem with swollen nodes.
Said to have male and female varieties. Root has
effervescent effect when chewed.
N.V.: ampar (Shuar)
Principal interest: used against intestinal and
blood-borne parasites; one pound of root mixed in 2
liters of water and boiled down to 1/3 volume; patient
drinks one cup before bed. Small children are given
enemas of same liquid (ca. 7 cc.). Secondary sources
list as useful for diarrhea.
