The New York Botanical Garden Piperaceae Piper amalago L. det. M. Nee, 1997 Bolivia. Depto. Santa Cruz, Prov. Andrés Ibáñez: On "Brecha 5, km 38", 3 km E of new highway from Santa Cruz to Camiri, the turnoff 29 km S of junction with highway from Santa Cruz to Samaipata. 18°04’S, 63°10’W. Alt. 460 m. Slightly rolling, sandy soil, mostly open soybean etc. fields to the east, still remnant forest to the west. At edge of field and exposed to wind with very weatherbeaten foliage, where inthe lee and protected, with normal leaves. Piper aduncun not seen here; no other species of Piperaceae seen. Brushy divisions between fields with remnants of original semi-deciduous subtropical forest plus weedy invaders such as Solarium riparium and Cnidoscolus basiacanthus. Shrub 2 m tall. Spikes erect.
