Bolivia. Santa Cruz. Vallegrande Prov. 2 km. SSE of Los Sitanos, canyon of Rio Los Sitanos.

Habitat
Brushy savanna-like slopes on sandy soil over red sandstone. Common here, but restricted in the Lost Sitanos area to a few locations.

Description
All plants short, the trunk 1 m. or a little more in height, usually several trunks together. Crown with 9 leaves; petioles fibrous at base; rachis 1.65 m. long; leaflets 60 per side, in groups of 2-4, at different angles. Unopened spathes green, erect; flowering inflorescences from among the green leaves; fruiting inflorescences becoming pendant, from among the dead leaves; peduncle 65 cm. long; only lower flowers fertile. Fruit varying in size and shape from tree to tree, green when ripe, just beginning the fruiting season; epicarp somewhat gelatinous, sweet and very agreeable in taste, like pineapple, much appreciated by local people. The white endosperm is also edible. Phenology of specimen: Flower, Fruit.
