Dear Howard:-
thanks ever-so-much for the loan of a Habenaria
specimen collected by George Neville Jones #16281 dated July
10, 1937.
I checked the identification and agree with Jones orig-
inal designation as Habenaria dilatata (Pursh) Hook* because
the spur is long and curved but not as long as the other floral
parts* It is not short and sack shape as pictured in Carrell
page 70 for H.d* albiflora (Gham) Gorrell* Then for a further
check, I covered the two labels and took it to Dr* Alcorn and he
also agrees with Jones i
Now for the mistery of the divided plate s it just occured
to me from the way Gorrell carefully labeled (specimen) (1) and
(2) and very likely called it to the attention of the person in
charge of your herbarium at the time; and this person cut the
plate and put the new *New York Botanical Garden* stamp on it. If
this is the correct guess, you might find the other fhalff in the
other folder ( and the person who was in charge wrote “MixtureH
over Gorrell1s label)*(Gertainlly it isn’t Correll*s writing)•
So now I remove H. dilatata albiflora from my state list
of Orchids, And thanks for all your help.
Sincerely,
•rUi/
