PLANTS OF ECUADOR EUPHORBIACEAE Manihot esculenta Siona: An-s6 Spanish: Yuca NAPO: Rio Cityabeno below inlet of Rio Tarapui, Pto. Bolivar, in garden of Victoriano Criollo, o^os'5 Garden in tropical rainforest, 230 m. 28 Jul 1983. A 2 m. high shrub cultivated for its starchy tubers. These are eaten boiled as the main carbohydrate source (togeth- er with Musa). The "yuca" is also used for making "chicha" which is a nourish- ing drink, which is sometimes left to ferment to produce an alcoholic beaver- age. This plant also produces a bread baked frcm the mashed tubers and sweet- ened with Iponoea, or it may be dried to produce a "grenola" like grain. H. RALSLEV & E. ASANZA 4369 04081569
