A 2 m. high shrub cultivated for its
starchy tubers. These are eaten boiled
as the main carbohydrate source (togeth-
er with Musa). The "yuca" is also used
for making "chicha" which is a nourish-
ing drink, which is sometimes left to
ferment to produce an alcoholic beaver-
age. This plant also produces a bread
baked frcm the mashed tubers and sweet-
ened with Iponoea, or it may be dried to
produce a "grenola" like grain.
