I would say that the type-species of
Jatronha L* is Jatronha Manihot L* It is the only species given
by Linnaeus answering his description of Jatropha.
The generic description of Linnaeus dates
hack to the first edition of the Genera Plantarum (1737) Ho* 721
p* 288* He cited Manihot of Tournefort pi* 438* His de-
scription calls for a plant wit$i only one floral envelope and
with *capsula subrotunda tricocea trilocularis, loculis
bivalvibuswith corolla tube »brevissimus*11 This is
answered by Jatropha Maniho-L which is Tournefort!s plant*
(See Pflan»DiSich IV 14? II p* 67-8)
He also cited Dillenius pi* 173* This is
L*^ it has two sets of floral organs highly
developed*
He also cited Jus sienna Houst* This finally
became Jàtroéha herbacea L* He made special remarks about its
pe culiarities (Gen * PI* Ed* 1 p* 384? Hort. Cliff* p* 445)* He
also made special remarks about Jatronha urens (Gen* PI* Id. 5
p* 437) Neither of these plants ha# ^ a corolla tube ^brevissimus*11
The species given by him in the first edition
of the Species Plantarum in order are (1) gossvplfolia
(2) moluccana (3) Curcas (4) mult if Ida (5) Manihot (6) urens
(V herbacea* The first four have sepals and petals well-developed
and do not agree with the Linnaean generic description. The last
two disagree, I believe, from his description of the capsules,
which seem? to have been taken from Tournefort1 s figure, and also
the corolla tube (Pflanaanieich IV 147 p. 97)*
