to heavy, silty soils; assoc, with Magnolia grandiflora, M.
macrophylla, Carpinus caroliniana, Quercus michauxii, shrub to 2
m tall, flowers deep maroon, smelling of fresh fish, or raw meat;
leaves strongly smelling of anise.
