Tree, 8-15 m tall, dioecious, common;
trunk and stems with sharp, ca. 1 cm
long spines; stems, leaves, and green
fruit with copious amounts of clear
sap that immediately turns white on

from base to apex of spike, staminal
column burgundy-colored at maturity;
mature fruits strongly oblate, 6-7 cm
wide x 4 cm thick, becoming hard,
brown, and dry, with carpels
separating and popping open to release
seeds. Vernacular name "Posentrie".
