346: Euphorbia nyikae Pax
Habitat: Undulating landscape. Soil brown. Vegetation
with trees and a very dense undergrowth of thornbush.
Description: Tree, 15 m tall. Trunk single, 40 cm in diam
near the ground. Bark brown, with lenticels. Higher up,
grey bark without lenticels. On the lower parts, weak
remnants of spines, on the higher parts, 2 cm high wings
where the spines have been. Number of wings 8. Branches
falling off on -the lower parts of the trunk with scars
in vertical rows at certain levels. Crown 6 m in diam.
Branches 3 m long, leaving the trunk at a right angle
and curving upwards. Branches with sidebranches and side-
branches with sidebranches. Branches leafless, succulent,
with first 2 wings., later with 3 and sometimes 4. i.e.
the number of wings increases with the age of the branch.
The seedlings also starting with 2 wings. When they are
4 0 cm high they get the 3rd wing. 2 m high plants seen
with 4 wings on the trunk. The very high plants have 8
wings on the trunk. On the margin of the wings small
spines. Spineshields first separate, but with increasing
age they become continous.
Flowers not seen but this is definitely the same as the
one collected as no. 344.
