Dear Dr. MacKeever:
I have held answering your letter until the specimens of Bartonia
arrived. I am returning them today with an annotation label on each.
Nantucket Island is unfortunately on the line between ray two sub-
species of B. paniculata - ssp paniculata and ssp. iodandra hence it is
very difficult to assign them to one or the other. In this area too,
there are a few intermediates between both B. paniculata and B. virginica.
I have written this up in the form of a revision which I hope to publish
soon. Even with this, a great deal of work is needed to thoroughly under-
stand this complex.
I hope that this word of explanation will help to explain my vague
annotations*
