Sidalcea malvaeflora (DC.) Gray ex Benth.
Checker-Bloom. Wild Hollyhock.
Quite local in clearing on brushy W-facing
slope near Sutro Forest, well uphill from
Laguna Honda, San Francisco, S. F. Co., Calif.
Plants were gregarious, ascending to erect
from woody rootstocks, covering an area of 3
to 4 sq. ft# Corolla pale pinkish lavender,
with darker lines. Flwr. stalks dull pur-
plish; sepals lined and tipped with a similar
color. Lvs. a fairly bright, somewhat glossy
green, a little lighter beneath. Green of
stems became stramineous to purplish toward
base. Associates included Brornus. Stipa.
Achillea. Brodiaea. itanuncuius« and, fairly
close by, shrub-sized Baccfaaris. (Petals, to
3 cm. long, seemed lgr. than avg. for S^. m.)
