Syn. 8. montana Congdon, Eryth. 7:183. 1900. Near Grass Valley, western Nevada County, Sierra Nevada Moun- tains, Lower Transition Zone, at an altitude of about 850 m. Growing through pine needles on red loam soil in open places in the forest of Pinus ponderosa, associated with Aster radulinus, Osmor- hisa nuda, and Silene Bridgesü. Collected by H. M. Hall and F.
