Young woods from old pasture on SE-facing slope w ith
crop fields below, in small valley. Celtis occidentalis,
Carya ovata.
Young tree 22 cm. in diameter, ca. 25 years old. Voucher
for wood specimens at Kw, Lw, MADw, MEXUw RSAw,
USZw. Sapwood pale; heartwood abruptly differentiated,
dark brown and nearly black. A blue-green stain appears at
junction of heartwood and sapwood soon after cutting).
Young growth viscid but much less so than Juglans cinerea,
strongly aromatic like the green walnut fruits later in the
year.
