Field Char: Understory shrub, 4 m tall, entirely
glabrous. Inflorescence axillary, males in
small cymules in lower axils, females solitary,
red, accrescent in fruit. Fruit, exocarp glossy
black.
Notes: Freshly dried foliage thrown on fires and
burned as mosquito repellent. Distinctive odor,
effective.
Locality: New Ireland; buttress ridge north of
Garuka village, above swamp.
Habitat: Base of hillside on margin of swamp,
in medium stature forest,
c. 50 m, 4°11’S X 142°44’E
Local Names: "’jarunga’" (Waskuk)
