[The collector is inferred to be Thomas Hogg, Jr.: American plantsman and son of Thomas Hogg, Sr., who was the owner of Hogg's Gardens in the Bowery, later relocated to Broadway. When Hogg Sr. died, the family nursery business was left to sons T. Hogg, Jr. & James. President Lincoln sent Hogg Jr. to Japan as a customs marshal in 1862. He sent many plants back to the U.S.. Their nursery was one of the leading sources of Asian plants in the U.S..]
