184 PLANTS OF OREGON Portland, Multnomah County Euonymus europaeus L. ! VM European Spindletree ====>First report from Oregon and west of the Mississippi River. Baric, fruiting material. Openish, brushy area on S side of Springwater Corridor ca. 0.15 - 0.22 mi E of SE 111th Ave., note there is a yellow fire hydrant (N side of building) at 0.15 mi E of 111th and a power tower at 0.16 mi E of 111th; site is ca. 10 paces (~33’) E of the W side of the W of the two buildings to ca. 55 paces (-180’) E of the same building, so the population extends ca. 100 paces (-330’); also on N side of trail at W end [0.15 mi] on E side of Crataegus tree; between 45.4787° N/122.54580 W (W end) and 45.4789°N/122.5447° W (E aid); about 20 shrubs or slenderly arborescent shrubs 4.5’ - 20’ (1.4-6 m) tall, from single (fruiting) stems 4.5’ (1.4 m) high, W (6 mm) wide, to 20’ tall plants with 14 branches at base 14” (36 on) across, the branches 1 - 2W' (2-6 cm), and 20’ tall tree like plants 4” (10 cm) wide with IV2” (4 cm) sucker at base, dividing at 36” (0.9 m) into 3” (7.5 cm) and 2Vi” (5.5 cm) branches;well established by 1998, possibly from the Leach Botanical Garden or other gardens in the area where known to be cultivated; leaves glabrous beneath; petals light green, with small reddish dots, calyx a darker green, the tip + pinkish (or not), sometimes with more widespread color, disk and ovary darker green, a real green, stamens borne on disk lobes; immature fruit an arresting reddish pinkish color, withAthyrium filix-femina, Corylus sp., Crataegus douglasii var. suksdorfii, C. monogyna, Epilobium sp., Galium aparine, Holcus lanatus, Hypericum perforatum, Phalaris arundinacea, Polystichum munitum, Rubus armeniacus, Salix lasiandra, Spiraea douglasii', not found in the “dense thickets” of willows to the west nor (actually rarely) the “grassier” area to the east; on ground that is not iimundated.
