CELASTRACEAE Euonymus atropurpureus Jacq.
A clone with some old dead gnarled shrubs in the center,
the largest stems 15 cm. in diameter, most living ones
are younger, to 3 m. tall and 8 cm. in diameter. Bark
smooth, gray, becoming furrowed only on largest stems.
/Twigs green, becoming brown the second year but may
be persistently green on undersides for several more
years. Inflorescence branches green; pedicels purple.
Flowers odorless, dark purple except for yellow anthers
and dull green stigma. No fruits found on any of the
three clones found here when visited later in the summer.
Dry, W-facing hilltop, heavily pastured by cattle until
about 10 years ago, mostly Poa pratensis, with Phleum
pratense, Daucus carota, Rhus radicans (low, non-viny),
Achillea millefolium, becoming brushy by invasion of
Zanthoxylum americanum, Ulmus americana, U. rubra,
Crataegus.
