I feel that the descriptions of Anthony (Amer. Mid. Nat. 55: 247-249) and
W&niger (Cacti of the Southwest, p. 183-184) give adequate reason why this
taxon should probably not be placed within 0. pháéácantha. While the
spines are certainly reminiscent of the pháeácáiitha complex, the dry
spiny fruits of var. spinosibacca remain distinct- Our tetraploid counts
for this taxon also differentiate it from the phaeacantha complex. I
currently believe that this is a good species by itself.
