Opuntia jjhaeacantha Engelm var. spinosibacca Anthony) L. Benson DET' dupl. by Lyman Benson july 19 79 Annotation - Herbarium of Arizona State University Plants of Xexas Brewster Co. Opuntia phaeacantha var. spinosibacca Dead Horse Mountains near Boquillas Canyon, Big Bend National Park, limestone soil, few fruits maturing although numerous flowers present. J. F. Weadin 1150 19 May 3 978 collection: J, F. Weedin 1150 Opuñtiá pháéácantha var« spinosibacca -{Sew yor> BOTANICAL garden NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN 03888584 I feel that the descriptions of Anthony (Amer. Mid. Nat. 55: 247-249) and W&niger (Cacti of the Southwest, p. 183-184) give adequate reason why this taxon should probably not be placed within 0. pháéácantha. While the spines are certainly reminiscent of the pháeácáiitha complex, the dry spiny fruits of var. spinosibacca remain distinct- Our tetraploid counts for this taxon also differentiate it from the phaeacantha complex. I currently believe that this is a good species by itself. 03888584
