Collection Notes
[This specimen was collected by John James Audubon, the renowned painter and author of The Birds of America, and The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. Audubon moved to New York City in the late 1830s (first downtown, and then to his homestead at ca. 155th-158th St. along the Hudson in 1840. All that is left of his house is a floorboard, preserved at the NY Historical Society. This specimen once belonged to druggist/botanist William Wallace Denslow, Sr. (1826-1868). His main collection is filed at the University of Mass. Amherst, including additional Audubon specimens.]
