SIGNAL HILL: disturbed, undeveloped property along
Hill Street in the two-block area between Stanley and
Ohio Avenues. Long Beach USGS 7.5' topo; T4S R12W
Sect 29. Elevation ca 250 feet (76 m).
Locally common herbaceous to suffrutescent
perennial with procumbent stems, forming low mounds
10-30 dm in diameter. Perianth segments ca. 2.5 mm
long by 1 mm broad, white to pale pinkish inside; anthers
pale salmon-pink.
Area scheduled to be developed. Currently, the
plants are mowed on a fairly regular basis but continue to
come back, and a portion of the site that has been plowed
remains infested.
Native to southern Africa; this apparently the first
known site for this taxon as a weed in North America.
