In extensive swampy woods with much Quercus palustris and Acer trilobum; also Q. bicolor, Q. alba, Liquidambar, Carya ovata, Ulmus americana, Fraxinus spp. (infrequent).

Sapling. [But less hairy; leaflets moderately small, serrate; notch profunda-like; 8x but not clearly profunda.] Locally abundant seedlings/saplings under gaps. No fruits.
