Cone terminal first season; subsequently lateral branches bear cones; or if terminal portion of plant damaged, branches ramify bearing cones. If grazed, at certain seasons small unbranched stems appear from rhizomes, each bear- ing terminal cone. Found in seepages and small swamps. PROV CHIMBORAZO: Cafion of the rio Chanchan near Huigra; 4,000- 4 500 ft. elev.
