Growing in extremely dense clumps in swampy ground by glacial lake. Center
of the plaint recessed and bright darkish green, decayed leaves at the edge of
the plant dark brown. Inner leaves glistening, slightly gluey, their upper part
green (even in their earliest growth), usually shading toward white at the base.
All leaves have horizontal white lines extending part way across the leaf. The
sporangium is white when young, then orange-fawn, and grey in the outer de-
caying leaves. Fleshy * ‘tap-root’ ’ with fibrous roots arising only on one side,
these massed to about eight inches below the plant.
