PLANTAS DE VENEZUELA
Philodendron karstenianum Schott
Climber to 3 m on tree trunk. Stem glossy tan-gray, upward 1.4
cm diam., internodes flat on one side. Petiole wings open; genic-
ulum mostly unwinged. Blade thinnish but very firm, adax. glossy
rich green; abax. lustrous & slightly lighter green, I.'s 7-8
per side with II.'s between; margin but slightly undulate; abax.
rib strong, brighter green or yellowish in old leaves. Inflores-
cences terminal & paired. Peduncle 3-angular in x.s. with ele-
vated striate lines. Spathe to 14.5 cm long, tube to 7.5 x 2.9-
3.2 cm, ill-defined until ovaries develop and swell basal part;
tube glossy bright green, limb paler to yellow-green. Odor of
cut tissue very pungent.
