Description
Pileus 7-9 cm broad, convex to plano-convex, dry, matted tomentose, dark brown (6-7F8) with decided violet to violet brown tones near margin, that color soon disappearing, with beveled margin. Flesh white, changing to pale pinkish brown, up to 1.5 cm thick, with pungent but not idiosyncratic odor and mild taste. Tubes adnate to depressed around stipe, up to 1.5 cm deep, nearest yellowish white (4A2) at first, becoming pinkish flesh color (6B3), with pores having a decided rosy pink cast at first, remaining pink and becoming concolorous with tubes, staining brown when injured. Stipe 8-12 cm long, 1.5 cm broad, clavate, up to 3 cm broad at base, rarely strict, usually curved, dry, dark brown (as in pileus) but usually somewhat paler at apex, white at the base, reticulate at the very apex only, with obscure uncommon ridges below, otherwise densely subpruinose to short subtomentose, interior white with olive colors in the base, otherwise staining as in pileus flesh.
