Description
Pileus 6.5-13 cm broad, convex to plano-convex, dry, matted subtomentose to subvelutinous, becoming finely and minutely areolate in places with age, dark brownish purple (14F4) when young, becoming dark ruby (12F6-5-4) with age, eventually violet brown (11E-F4), with an incurved to slightly beveled margin when young. Flesh up to 3 cm thick, white, slowly and erratically changing to pinkish to pinkish brown when exposed, with mild odor and slightly bitter taste. Tubes depressed around stipe, grayish orange (5B4-3) when young, (9B3) with age, bruising brownish; pores dull rosy pink when very young, soon concolorous with tubes, staining as tubes. Stipe 8.5-15 cm long, strict or curved, subbulbous to exceedingly clavate, dry, white at base, concolorous with pileus above, subpruinose below reticulate apex (upper 3 cm or less), becoming more orange brown (7D8) at apex with age, with white interior, staining as in pileus, with dark olive brown stains at extreme base.
