Description
Pileus 6-10 cm broad, convex to plano-convex, dark brown (7F8), occasionally becoming maculose spotted, often with dull reddish grayish brown (8C-D3) (otherwise referred to previously as lilac or purple or perhaps purplish gray, CHECK RIDGWAY comparison of the Methuen notation), occassionally pale gray where not esposed to light, matted subtomentose, becoming finely areolate cracked in some when drying out with exposure, with beveled margin and remaining so for some time. Flesh white, up to 2.5 cm thick, with pungent, non-idiosyncratic odor but sometimes styptic taste. Tubes depressed around stipe, white becoming pinkish flesh color, up to 1 cm deep, with pores white at first, becoming pinkish flesh color with age, bruising brown, <1 mm broad. Stipe 6-17 cm long, 1.5-2 cm broad, clavate to broadly clavate, strict or curved, dry, pallid at first at apex, then reddish brown colors, reddish brown to dark brown to dull reddish grayish brown below, reticulate at apex only, pruinose below to base, white at base to very rarely butter yellow (4A5) slightly above base, with interior white to sordid yellow to yellowish olive.
