Tuber 18 cm diam., 10 cm thick, with a
few tubercles to 3 cm long on top; ca.
SO cm underground. Roots white, many,
to 0.4 cm diam. Petiole sheath 30 cm
long, 8 cm wide, reddish-brown with
purple spots. Petiole to 2 m long, 6
cm diam. at base, 2 cm diam. at apex,
dark green mottled with pale green,
warty, with spiny projections on upper
half. Blade 3-parted, each part of ca.
1 m long; rachis pale green with dark
green spiny projections, from petiole
apex to first branch 30 cm long for
central part and 22 cm long for
lateral parts. Peduncle 10 cm above
ground, 1.8 cm diam., dark green
tinged brown, mottled with purple line
spots. Infruetescence 10-15 cm long,
5—8 cm diam. Stipe 2 cm long, 1.5 cm
diam. Fruits to 1.5 cm diam., green
turning yellow with red top when ripe,
scent pleasant, tastes like Piper but
sweet with 4 seeds each. Tubers sent
to Missouri Botanical Garden.
