m Stems thick, more or less decumbent at base, rising to 3 or more m. high. Leaves
Bternate, oval-oblong, pinnately veined, abruptly acuminate, 35 or more cm. long and 20
pr more cm. wide, spotted with irregular white areas, midrib and petiole thick and fleshy,
green. Flowers monoecious, small, on a fleshy spadix surrounded with an oblong spathe.
Introduced ornamental (9932). The juice is very irritating and when taken
into the mouth may cause temporary paralysis of the vocal apparatus. English
name, dumbcane.
