PLANTAS DE VENEZUELA
Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott
Stemless. Petiole never glaucous, flat adax. & convex-angular up-
ward, terete below, variously marked red-purple, sheath closed.
Blade bowl-shaped, adax. blue-green, matte, darker toward ribs &
nerves which are themselves paler; midrib slightly convex, a vio-
let mark over junction with petiole; abax. gray, glaucous. Spathe
tube ovoid-ellipsoid, 4.5 cm long, green suffused red-purple, per-
sistent; limb strong yellow, tip greenish, 20.5 cm long, recurved,
only basal 5 cm open, rest remains furled; fugacious. Staminate
part of spadix 4.5 cm long, exserted.
Cultivated in field on steep slope in full sun, for edible corms.
