  • Description

III: 80. Pretty distinctive red russulas, if there is such a thing. These are large but extremely brittle and fragile, decaying within a day. Pileus deep rose red or lighter; essentially broadly convex but often irregular, even mutated so the stipe is intergrown with the pileus; fragile; 3-9 cm; cuticle peeling at margin; flesh often rose colored below cuticle; becoming tuberculate-striate at extreme margin. Lamellae subdistant; adnate/adnexed; often forking at base; intermediates of various lengths; broad; creamy white; fragile but thick; in one larger specimen forking throughout (not just at base) and frequently; not discoloring or bruising. Stipe 4-6 x 2-4 cm; irregular but basically equal; flushed with cap color or not, but more often heavily; extremely brittle and fragile; hollowing. Context quickly becoming mealy and disintegrating; whitish. Odor pleasant; taste immediately very acrid. Spore print cream / pale yellow. 3/20/09: Pleurocystidia subfusoid; abundant. Spores ellipsoid; 5-8 x 5-6 microns; warts to about 1 micron, isolated, or with connectors scattered--occasionally partially reticulate. Pileipellis a cutis of hyaline gelatinized elements; pcy to 100 x 8; ochraceous and refractive in KOH; cylindric with rounded apices; originating in subcutis.
