sect. 28. West side of IL Route 2, west side of the Rock
River, 0.5 mile north of the main entrance to the
Stronghold and Blackhawk Presbytery and camp. Upper
portion of ridge just below The Castle, south of Mud
Creek. Elevation ca. 722-738 feet. Loam and humus
over dolomite, on talus slopes and dolomite cliffs /
outcrops.
Mesic to dry-mesic upland forest on east-facing slopes
at ridgetop, with Acer saccharum, Alliaria, Carex spp.,
Mertensia virginica, Parthenocissus, Quercus
muhlenbergii, Q. rubra, Scilla, Solidago flexicaulis,
Tilia, Ulmus americana. Locally common fleshy herb
with ovoid bulb, foliage glaucous, fruits ripe, generally
lying on ground; established garden escape.
