Stem 1 or more m. tall and up to 15 or more cm. in diameter. Leaves cordate-
sagittate, glabrous, margins entire or wavy, obtuse to acuminate, up to 1 m. long and 60 )
cm. wide but commonly smaller in some varieties, petioles up to 1 or more meters long, ;
sheathing at the base. Flowers monoecious, on a fleshy spadix, enclosed in a greenish
spathe.
Cultivated commonly , as an ornamental (9922, 9991, 9993,- 9994, 9995,
9996, 9997, 10135). The stems may be used for food in times of food short-
age. English name, giant taro; native name, kape. The following listed

Kape kaihule: petioles reddish at the bottom.
Kapekula: petioles red.
Kape laumao: petioles green.
Kape matamata: petioles green with purplish lines.
Kape pulaka: petioles green above, reddish below.
Kape tea: petioles yellow, leaves large.
Kape uli: petioles nearly black.
