Perennial graminoid; carpellate scales yellow; leaf sheath apex thickened & yellow; growing in association with Cardamine pensylvanica, Carex atlantica ssp. atlantica, Osmunda cinnamomea, Onoclea sensibilis, Dryopteris carthusiana, Viola cuculiata, V. pallens, Ludwigia palustris, Symplocarpus foetidus, Juncus effusus and Arisaema triphyllum.
