  • Description

    Tree, 6 m tall x 20 cm dbh. Bark brown, ridges narrow, 5-10 mm wide, shedding in long, thin plates. Leaves variable in size, largest from apex of stem to smallest at base of stem, the largest with petiole 15 cm long and leaf blade 30 cm long, the adaxial side green, the abaxial side lighter green, the apex long acuminate. Fruits green, immature, 30 cm long x 1.2 cm diam. Seeds winged, the ends with well-developed fringes, the embryo purple.

    The difference of Catalpa speciosa from C. bignonioides is by 1) absent pungent smell when leaves crushed, 2) long, acuminate leaf blade apices; and 3) seeds with ends of wings with well developed fringes.
