Vitaceae Parthenocissus quinquefolia (L.) Planch,
det. M. Nee, 2017
WISCONSIN, Richland Co., 3 miles SE of center of
Richland Center.
43°18’31.5”N, 90°19’50”W. alt. 235 m.
T 10 N; R 1 E; border of SWV&SWK sect. 25/SE,/4SE!/4 sect. 26.
Woody vine climbing to top of Celtis occidentalis tree 40 cm.
in diameter and 55 years old. Stem 4 cm. in diameter, with
thick bark, the wood cylinder 2.5 cm. in diameter, the large
vessels forming nearly adjacent rings which may be annual
rings and then this vine perhaps about as old as the support
tree, the bare stem hanging free for the lower 11m. above the
ground, then beginning to produce short (< 1 m. long)
flowering side shoots but without any adventituous roots or
tendrils. At 14 m. the tree begins to branch and the vine begins
being irregularly entwined in the branches, rarely with tendrils
with sticky pads toward the top of the tree but these not
effective in climbing. Voucher for wood specimens at Kw,
Lw, MADw, MEXUw, RSAw. Topmost leaves completely
skeletonized by Japanese beetles (Popillia japonica), those in
the shade and interior of canopy not much attacked.
