Scenic overlook and picnic area in old quarry in dolomite,
top of Mississippi River bluff. Young woods and open
areas, with Ulmus rubra, Rhamnus cathartica, Lonicera
maackii, Cornus rugosa, C. racemosa, Juniperus
virginiana, Betula papyrifera, Populus grandidentata,
Andropogon gerardii.
Axillary buds very dark, nearly black. Leaves in sun,
somewhat shiny above; smaller, plane and with veins
impressed above but otherwise not rugose or rough as in U.
rubra; recently dried foliage without any hint of the bumt-
sugar odor of U. rubra. Leaves larger than in U. pumila
(none noticed in the picnic area of the floor of the old
quarry) and with a few lateral veins branching. Compare
with no. 63861 a tree about the same size and growing in
the same conditions but with leaves very different and
typical of U. rubra.
