Swamp with Alnus incana ssp. rugosa, Spiraea alba, Salix
petiolaris, S. discolor and with only a little Sphagnum and
Chamaedaphne calyculata.
Shrub 2.4 m. tall, in a clump but old and hard to tell where
originally connected, the stems 2.7 cm. in diameter and 7
years old or to a little larger but then horizontal or nearly so
in the swamp and thus difficult to trace to original roots.
Voucher for wood specimens at Kw, Lw, MADw, RSAw,
the wood specimen from an upright stem growing from
leaning trunk. Staminate; catkins visited by small insects
(3:15 P.M., sunny); see Nee 63446 for a pistillate plant.
