Fagaceae Castanea dentata (Marshall) Borkh.
det. M. Nee, 2016
Wisconsin, Sauk Co., 1.5 km. SSE of center of Spring Green,
between Hwy. 23 and Old River Road (now only gravel).
43°09’41”N, 90°03’4r’W. alt. 233 m.
T 8 N; R 4 E; SW^SE^ sect. 18.
Young tree, 12 m. tall, 15 cm. in diameter. Voucher for wood
specimens at Kw, Lw, MADw, MEXUw, RSAw. Staminate
inflorescences creamy white, with musty, unpleasant odor,
with open flowers. Pistillate flowers fewer, green.
Many trees of this species spontaneous within plantation of Pinus
strobus and P. resinosa, River Valley School Forest, Spring
Green Unit, flat, dry and sandy terrace, to the north of a natural
floodplain forest a few meters lower with Acer saccharinum,
Betula nigra. Derived from the heavily fruiting population of
dozens of trees planted decades ago, in a line, with trunks to 50
cm. in diameter, all the large old ones multi-stemmed from the
base, as if regenerated from fungus infection decades ago, but
now the trees look healthy and a few of the oldest, largest ones
apparently declining not from chestnut blight but more from the
sub-optimal habitat. There is some reproduction of all size classes
where there is sufficient sunlight; these saplings and young trees
also look healthy.
