S-facing .Wisconsin River valley bluff, formerly dry prairie,
then pastured, now grown up to woods. Lower slope with
Juniperus virginiana, Prunus serótina, Morus alba, Quercus
macrocarpa, Ulmus (U. americana or U. rubra, now dead).
Tree 18 m. tall, 40 cm. in diameter, the wood specimen from
erect trunk 11 m. above the ground and 15 cm. in diameter.
Voucher for wood specimens at Kw, Lw, MADw, MEXUw,
RSAw. Wood with distinctive pleasant odor; heartwood
characteristic pink-purple, the sapwood very light. Female;
“fruit” glaucous.
