Description
Tree about 25 m tall and about 80 cm diameter; bark greenish-brown, forming rectangular, vertical plates; twigs green; needles dark green, some distinctly flexuous; female cones pendent; male cones just past anthesis. NYBG accession number: 17552A, PT L, Lowell M. Palmer. A lightning strike on the night of 17/18 August 2018 severely damaged this tree, causing a vertical split bisecting the tree completely through from the top to just above the ground. The tree was removed on 20 August 2018. Michael Nee collected this same tree on 26 March 1999 (Nee 50119, NY) with accession number 80219A. The accession number was changed to 17552A sometime between 1999 and 2018. A scion of this tree is grafted onto a Pinus strobus and planted nearby (NYBG accession number 350/2000*A). Phenology of specimen: Fertile.
