Small tree 3.66 meters tall; flowers malodorous, held in rounded
“balls” before opening, petals brilliant white, 10 stamens in one
whorl, anthers deep burgundy-red; previous season’s twigs reddish
and with thin thorns, two year previous twigs gray; trunk bark light
gray-tan with fissures and thorns. Growing in association with
Quercus velutina, Nyssa sylvatica, Prunus serótina, Sassafras
albidum, Viburnum dentatum var. venosum and Lonicera
morrowii.
*Note-this is the first Crataegus species to flower in Montauk.
