Distribution
Specimens from the iclict population of Tofieldia in Burlington Co.,, New Jersey, have generally been determined as T. racemosa. This is somewhat puzzling, for while the population is variable, and there are aspecs in some of these plants strongly suggestive of T. racemosa, that would explain the determination, the majority are much 'glutinosa' pubescence (note adhering panicles rarely present in T. racemosa); the narrower, less spread bracteoles that generally lack glandular hairs; the more ascending pedicels; the shorter intemodes in most inflorescences; and the capsules. I would suppose that in the past the two species had overlapping ranges in this northeastern region where they no longer are found, and that some hybridization between T. glutinosa by T. racemosa occurred. The Burlington Co. population is a surviving disjunct remnant, and contains genes from both species. John G. Packer - April 16,1991. closer morphologically to T. glutinosa. This, it seems to me, is seen in the typical tykJLC. ) HERBARIUM OF WITMER STONE FLORA OF NORTH AMERICA Flora of BURLINGTON Co., NEW JERSEY Symmes* Place 3 miles w. of Cedar (Warren) Grove.
